Glasgow is fast becoming the go-to hub for the world’s leading electrical and electronics engineers following a series of new conference wins
Glasgow set to host 6 further IEEE Conferences
Glasgow has been chosen as the host city for the 2020 World Congress on Computational Intelligence (IEEE WCCI), the largest technical event in the field of computational intelligence, further cementing the city’s position as a hub for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) conferences.
Glasgow has hosted six of these conventions since 2015 with a further six scheduled to take place through to 2022. These 12 meetings will have attracted 8,000 delegates to the city and contributed an estimated £14.8 million to the local economy.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the trusted “voice” for engineering, computing, and technology information around the globe. There are more than 423,000 IEEE members, in over 160 countries around the world, who are either engineers, scientists or allied professionals whose technical interests are rooted in electrical and computer sciences, engineering, and related disciplines.
Glasgow's universities have long been a hub for driving innovation in this sector. The University of Glasgow is home to the oldest School of Engineering in the UK, delivering world-class engineering education for more than 150 years and the University of Strathclyde is recognised as one of the UK's leading technological universities with seven of its eight Engineering departments ranked in the top 10 in the UK on research power.
Glasgow is home to one of the most collaborative and dynamic innovation economies in Europe, with outstanding partnerships between the public, private and academic sectors. Conference organisers wishing to host a meeting in Glasgow can benefit from this close cross-sectoral collaboration thanks to the strength of our Conference Ambassador Programme and our world-leading conferencing facilities, a great example being the Technological and Innovation Centre which was designed specifically to accelerate the way in which researchers in academia and industry collaborate and innovate together.
Seven different venues across Glasgow have been chosen thus far to host IEEE conferences in recent years. As well as the city’s universities, this includes the likes of the Grand Central Hotel where the world’s first long-distance television pictures were transmitted to - a major historical innovation in this key sector. This summer, 100 delegates will gather at the hotel for the IEEE Cyber Science Conference, which will focus on pioneering research and innovation in Cyber Situation Awareness, Social Media, Cyber Security and Cyber Incident Response.
We chose to host IEEE Cyber Science in Glasgow as it's a vibrant, friendly city, with excellent travel links to the rest of Scotland, and beyond. Glasgow, and Scotland as a whole, has a strong research community centred around cyber security, supported by Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA). IEEE Cyber Science is an international, refereed conference, and will benefit the city by providing links with experts in the field of cyber security. Additionally, this will provide delegates with the opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage and scenery of Scotland, which is a top destination.
Upcoming IEEE conferences include:
- IEEE 5G Summit will take place at the University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre on 14 May 2018, attracting 300 delegates and contributing an estimated £122,100 to the city’s economy
- IEEE Cyber Science will take place at the Grand Central Hotel on 11 and 12 June 2018, attracting 90 delegates and contributing an estimated £93,000 to the city’s economy
- IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics will take place at the University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre on 19 - 21 September 2018, attracting 100 delegates and contributing an estimated £122,100 to the city’s economy
- IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium will take place at the Scottish Event Campus from 6 – 9 October 2019, attracting 1,300 delegates and contributing an estimated £2.1 million to the city’s economy
- IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence will take place at the Scottish Event Campus from 19 – 24 July 2020, attracting 2,000 delegates and contributing an estimated £4.9 million to the city’s economy
- International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society will take place at the Scottish Event Campus from 11 – 15 July 2022, attracting 2,000 delegates and contributing an estimated £4.1 million to the city’s economy
