Tramway

Tramway is a leading international art space that commissions produces and presents contemporary visual and performance art. 

Based in the south of Glasgow, a few minutes by train from the city centre, in premises that began life as a tram depot, Tramway has a high quality, agenda-setting experimental and dynamic programme.

Tramway was the first venue in Scotland to host the world-famous Turner Prize, in 2015, and is one of the most sought after and prestigious spaces in Scotland for artists to present new work.

Tramway’s versatile spaces can be used by private and corporate clients as an edgy venue ‘with a difference’.  Tramway is an ideal space for performances, exhibitions, private viewings, seminars, meetings and smaller-scale functions.

Tramway 1 is a flexible space capable of meeting the needs of the most demanding projects and ambitious ideas. It has a standard capacity of 600 seats of which 378 are flexible and can be set in a variety of configurations. The remaining 222 seats form a fixed balcony overlooking the main performing area.

Tramway 2 is the principal exhibition space and one of the largest single galleries in Europe. The original tramlines, steel pillars and the sheer scale of this space make it one of the most impressive visual arts spaces in Europe.

Tramway 4 is a studio theatre with flexible seating for up to 90 people. Tramway 5 is an exhibition space that can accommodate up to 60 people.

The Studio offers a more traditional setting and is suitable for smaller board meetings, presentations and talks for between 4 and 40 people.

The venue also benefits from a spacious Café offering fresh, organic produce.  Immediately adjacent to the cafe is the Mezzanine area which offers an informal meeting space that can be used as breakout for up to 40 people.

The doorway has a grey sign reading "TRAMWAY" and set back from the street - above an automatic glass door - is a large yellow art work taking up the height of the entrance way. A parked car, bike racks, a lamppost and a CCTV camera can all be seen. The pavement is tarmac but the entrance to Tramway is paved with bricks.

  • An interior view from Tramway's entrance corridor shows a post-industrial space with white-washed brick walls, a vaulted skylight roof and wooden beams. The floor has a polished concrete finish. Staircases leading off of the corridor on the right have steel tread plate and black, metal bannisters. A large wall painting on the first storey wall reads, in black writing, "Cafe bar & stables" and smaller writing lists, Exhibitions, workshops, events etc. Toilets and galleries are signposted on a pillar beyond.
