Cristiano Ronaldo’s surgeon to give public lecture at Glasgow Science Centre

World’s leading orthopaedic and sport surgeons gather in Glasgow for major international conference

A world renowned ankle surgeon and specialist in sports trauma who has treated international dancers and athletes including Cristiano Ronaldo, Professor C Niek van Dijk, will host a special event at Glasgow Science Centre for members of the public on 10 May.

Professor van Dijk is one of over 2,800 attendees at the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) Congress taking place at the Scottish Event Campus from 9 – 12 May.  This four day gathering of the world’s leading sports and orthopaedic surgeons, scientists and clinicians is expected to boost the city’s economy by £4 million.

Glasgow holds a world leading position in the field of medical research and practice, with associations who choose to host their conferences here benefitting from the cross sectoral collaboration between the NHS, our academics and research hubs.

It’s fantastic to see this partnership working extend beyond the walls of the conference centre, giving Glaswegians the opportunity to benefit from the meeting too. Some of the world’s greatest medical breakthroughs, from the world’s first bone graft and successful removal of a brain tumour to pioneering antiseptic surgery and the first Caesarean section, have taken place in Glasgow. By working with conference organisers to host public events like these we hope to inspire Glasgow’s next generation of medical minds. Councillor David McDonald, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life
This is the first time that we have engaged with members of the general public during one of our congresses, helping to raise our profile within the city. Professor van Dijk’s stories and insights will not only be of interest to those working in our field but to individuals who have an interest in sport and science more generally. Given that it’s Scotland’s Year of Young People, we hope this will motivate those considering a career in medicine to find out more about our field.” Zhanna Kovalchuk, Executive Director of the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) Congress

Judy Murray OBE, former Scottish international tennis player with 64 national titles to her name, will also deliver a Presidential Guest Lecture at the ESSKA Congress.  Her son, Andy Murray, has recently undergone surgery which he hopes will allow him to play at Wimbledon this summer and restore him to near the high point of his career in late 2016 when he began a run of 37 weeks as world Number 1.
