Masala Twist Tikka and Tapas Bar is a popular Indian restaurant on Hope Street in Glasgow’s city centre. Taking its cue from its older sister – Masala Twist on Byres Road – Masala Twist Tikka and Tapas Bar combines locally sourced ingredients with Indian spices and cooking methods to create contemporary Indian dishes.
The open plan kitchen means that guests can enjoy the theatre of watching the kitchen brigade prepare their food. It is quite a show. The menus at Masala Twist Tikka and Tapas Bar are designed to appeal to Indian food traditionalists as well as those searching for something a bit different.
Old favourites such as onion bhajis, chicken tikka and lamb rogan josh are joined by regional specialities like the venison curry from Rajasthan. Not that all the dishes are Indian regional specialities. The haggis pakora and curry made from mince and tatties tell their own tale of how Indian food integrated with Glasgow’s culinary tastes. In season, you may even find grouse curry on the menu.
As well as the traditional starter, main course dessert structure, Masala Twist Tikka and Tapas Bar also serves tapas-sized portions. The staff recommend that diners begin with three or four tapas portions between two and then order more if need be. It is the perfect way to experience the brilliant variety of dishes on offer at Masala Twist Tikka and Tapas Bar.
The brave may choose to take on the dish billed as ‘Scotland’s hottest curry’. It is restricted to diners aged over 21 and is made with the eight hottest varieties of chilli in the world. A less macho and more aromatic choice would be the Hyderbadi dum biryani. Available in chicken, lamb, prawn and vegetable versions, it is fragrant rice dish flavoured with cardamom, saffron, and fenugreek, all garnished with coriander.
