Glasgow: Dear Green Place
Glasgow is one of Europe’s leading sustainable tourism destinations. The city has an overall goal to be net zero by 2030 and acknowledges the destination’s role in promoting and encouraging responsible tourism and events.
Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as inspiration, the city is focusing on taking forward the Glasgow Tourism 2030 Strategy.
In 2023 Glasgow was ranked 8th within the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, against 100+ other destinations across the world.

2017
- Launched People Make Glasgow Greener campaign
- Glasgow Convention Bureau achieves Silver Green Tourism Award
2018
- Awarded Scotland's first UCI Bike City status
2020
- Achieved Earthcheck status
- Global Forum of Human Settlements
2021
- Host city for COP26.
- Achieved Bronze Sustainable Food Places.
- Signed Tourism Declares Climate Emergency.
- Glasgow City Council sets net-zero by 2030 targets.
- Glasgow Food Policy Partnership (GFPP) launches City Food Plan.
- Signed Glasgow Declaration.
2022
- OVO Hydro - First arena in the world to achieve Greener Arena Certification.
- Launched Glasgow's Sustainable Tourism and Conventions Action Plan .
- GFPP started its own Good Food Movement Campaign, Good Food for Glasgow.
2023
- Launched new Glasgow 2030 Tourism Strategy with a move away from volume and focus on delivering tourism in a sustainable and inclusive way.
- Remained in top 10 (8th place) of the Global Destinations Sustainability Index.
- Achieved Silver Sustainable Food Places.
2024
- Glasgow World Indoor Championships becomes first event to earn platinum level recognition for sustainable delivery
